Practice the below given phrases regularly to familiarize yourself with the language to the best capacity.

Abbreviations used:

Noun = N;
Preposition = Prep.
Adj. = Adjective;
Adv. = Adverb;

  • Meaning = Elementary principles / basic (fundamental) things

Example:

  • Do you know the ABCs of algebra?

  • Meaning = Beyond (Taking) everything, chiefly

Example:

  • He was above all an engineer.

  • Adj.
  • Adv.
  • Meaning = Open, honest, legitimate.

Example:

  • The accounts given by him were completely above board. (Adj.)
  • He submitted the account of expenses completely above board. (Adv.)

  • Meaning = An uncontrollable natural incidence

Example:

  • The flooding was surely an act of God.

  • Meaning = In spite of expectations

Example:

  • It didn’t rain after all.
  • I told him I couldn’t do it after all.

Meaning = Repeatedly

Example:

  • The TV channel flashed the news again and again.

  • Meaning = A mediator / negotiator

Example:

  • He was a go-between to find a suitable bride for my son.

  • Meaning = All people / everyone

Example:

  • He became a target for all and sundry.

  • Meaning: Considering all (everything)

Example:

  • All in all it’s been a good year for us.

  • Meaning: Suddenly / unexpectedly

Example:

  • All of a sudden she started crying.

  • Adj.
  • Adv.
  • Prep.
  • Meaning: In every place / everywhere

Example:

  • The harvesting was all over. (Adj.)
  • He harvested vegetables all over. (Adv.)
  • Unemployment has been a problem all over the world. (Prep.)

  • Meaning: A privilege / concession (not a right)

Example:

  • The bonus marks given were the act of grace.

  • Meaning: Essential principle / a firm belief

Example:

  • She holds an article of faith that women should have equal rights.

  • Meaning: Cause (subject) of quarrel, dispute, etc.

Example:

  • The undivided property is an apple of discord between the two brothers.

  • Meaning: Neat & Perfect  order

Example:

  • All class rooms have to be in apple pie order.

  • Meaning: With arms linked/ In close cooperation

Example:

  • They worked arm in arm.

  • Meaning: Extremely well-armed

Example:

The commandos were armed to the teeth.

  • Meaning: In reality / in fact

Example:

  • As a matter of fact, he is richer than his friend.

  • Meaning: Most of the time/ in most cases

Example:

  • As a rule the climate here remains cool and pleasant.

  • Meaning: Regardless of the costs involved

Example:

  • At all costs he was anxious to pass the exam.
