Do we really have the ‘Third Eye’?

The Third Eye in our head….

Myth or Mystery?

Our Ancestors believed that the pineal gland in our brain was the “Third Eye”.

They also strongly worshipped it as it had mystical powers in other words having supernatural abilities.

Location of the pineal gland in the brain:

It extends downward from the third ventricle of the brain. The exact location is above and behind the pituitary gland.

Some philosophers believed that pineal gland is the entrance and exit door to our soul.

French philosopher Rene Descartes (1596 – 1650) described this in his writings.

He said that soul comes into or goes out of our physical body through pineal gland.

Thus he referred it as the ‘Third Eye’.

Really stunning…… like a modern graphical scientific fiction movie.

Many mythologies also confirm the fact that soul is deathless and come and go stuff. The body is the only carrier. Life survives when soul is in. Body is declared dead when it leaves.

Some Deities Siva, Durga in Hindu mythology or mythological creatures like Ravens associated with Apollo in Greek epics have third eye.

  • Lord Siva’s third eye is believed to be a symbol of strength and destruction.
  • The third eye of Goddess Durga (Trinayini Durga i.e. three-eyed Durga) represents fire and knowledge.
  • The Raven with the third eye is represented as all-seeing, the past, present, and the future.
  • According to Hinduism and Buddhism, the third eye represents the enlightenment through meditation. The third eye is located in the middle of the forehead above the eyebrows.

Now, let’s just tap some medical facts about the pineal gland.

Medical Facts about pineal gland:

The pineal gland is composed of parts of neurons, but otherwise has no direct neural connection with the brain.

Quite interesting! Having neurons and not connected directly with the brain, it seems, a bit, supernatural! Then what is it really connected with or what does it really do?

Science says that it belongs to the endocrine system.

What is Endocrine System?

Primarily, it works as a communication hub.

There are two systems in our body that carry communication.

  1. Nervous System
  2. Endocrine System

In Nervous System, the communication is carried out through nerve impulses that travel through the body’s nerve fiber system. In Endocrine System, the communication is done out through hormones.

What are hormones?

Hormones are the chemicals that travel through the bloodstream that prompt stimulation and inhibition of nerve impulses.

Endocrine systems contains organs known as glands such as hypothalamus, pituitary, anterior pituitary, posterior pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid glands, adrenal, pancreas, and sex glands (ovaries and testes).

Now let’s come to the Third Eye… i.e. Pineal Gland.

Scientists know very little about the pineal gland.

Researchers say that it releases melatonin.

Melatonin responds to light and dark.

It communicates that information to the rest of the body through hormones.

How melatonin from pineal gland works:

The function of melatonin is still not completely clear.

Melatonin influences the body’s daily biological rhythms known as ‘Circadian Clock’.

Thus, it is regulated by night/day cycles such as sleep/wake patterns and reproduction system.

The concentration of melatonin is highest at night and falls to almost undetectable levels during the day.

So, is the pineal gland really the entrance/exit door of the soul as philosopher Rene Descartes claimed? – Or – a supernatural ‘Third Eye’ as thought by our ancestors? – Or – part of our body’s ‘circadian clock’?

The future can only answer these questions.

Let’s see what happens! Is the role of this small ‘pineal gland’ limited to day and night only? – Or – Is it a miracle?
