“World Wide Web” (www)
Timothy Berners-Lee, a British scientist, and inventor of the World Wide Web, was born on June 8, 1955 in London, England.
He is a computer scientist and a professor at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His full name is Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee. He is familiar as TimBL and TBL.
The first Web browser and Web server was devised and implemented by him.
The first Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server using internet was created by him on March 12, 1989 based on his newly developed information management system.
Thus the World Wide Web (www) was invented by him in 1989 to meet the demand for automated information-sharing between people and organizations around the world.
The three fundamental technologies that appear on web browser such as HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), The (markup) formatting language for the web, and URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) were written by him by October, 1990.
His was born to Conway Berners-Lee (father) and Mary Lee Woods (mother), both were computer scientists.
He earned his bachelor degree (BA) from the Queen’s College, Oxford.
Tim married Nancy Carlson in 1990 and divorced in 2011. Later in 2014, he married Rosemary Leith. He has 2 children and 3 step-children.
Tim leads the A4AI (the Alliance for Affordable Internet), the coalition organization launched in 2013, that includes Google, Facebook, Intel, and Microsoft.
He is the director of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). It is the main international standards organization for the World Wide Web to oversee the continued the continued development of the web.
He is the co-founder of the World Wide Web Foundation.
At the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) he is the key person to hold 3Com (best known for computer network products.
He works as a director of WSRI (Web Science Research Initiative),
He is a member of the advisory board of the MIT Centre for Collective Intelligence.
He was one of the members of the board of trustees of the Ford Foundation in 2011.
He founded and holds the post of president of the Open Data Institute (OPI), a non-profit organization in 2012 in London, intended to connect and inspire people in the field of Data around the world.
He is an advisor for MeWe, a global social media and networking service in Los Angeles, California.
He has received many awards such as:
