USS Nautilus (SSN-571)
USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, was launched on 21 January 1954 and commissioned on 30 September 1954.
Moreover, she was the first submarine crossed the North Pole underwater on 3 August 1958.
She was built by General Dynamics Corporation (GD), Virginia and operated by the United States Navy. She traveled to many locations and broke the records set by previous submarines because of her nuclear power.
She was in operation from 1954 to 1980.
The submarine’s installed nuclear power was 13,400 HP (10,000 KW). She was initially equipped with STR nuclear reactor with two-shafted geared steam turbines. The STR reactor was later replaced by S2W reactor by the US navy. She was armed by six torpedo tubes.
She was decommissioned on 3 March 1980 and preserved as a museum ship in Groton, Connecticut. Around 250,000 people visit her every year.
