The location for the school was about a mile northwest of the Athens Acropolis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was set in a park of olive groves of Hecademus or Akademos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hecademus was a legendary Attic hero in Greek mythology. He gave this garden to the city for celebrating religious festivals and athletic contests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plato\u2019s school, and its countless schools and colleges ever since, was therefore called the \u201cAcademy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said that the area had probably been used for teaching and discussion for some decades before Plato.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s unclear if he set up any formal organization there. But it is certain that Plato owned a house and small garden in the area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"507\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Plato-Garden-House-1024x507.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-675\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Plato-Garden-House-1024x507.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Plato-Garden-House-300x149.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Plato-Garden-House-768x380.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Plato-Garden-House-1170x580.jpg 1170w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Plato-Garden-House.jpg 1181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There Plato went on to teach and systematize philosophy until his death occurred at the age of 80 years. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plato believed in the immortality of the soul, and several dialogues end with long speeches imagining the afterlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plato\u2019s most famous contribution is the theory of Forms by pure reason known as Platonism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He strongly believed in and used to teach his students that \u201cThe direction in which education starts a man will determine his future life.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His Academy became renowned for the school of philosophers known as Neo-Platonists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It survived for several hundred years after his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He accepted only dedicated students who were very fond of learning. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was written in his own writings that he used to teach his students by walking around reading from his dialogues and lectures,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that he presided over religious meetings and long meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The participants of the meetings used to honor the gods and enjoy each other\u2019s company with refreshing learned discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also set up a temple of the Muses, called Museion, nearby. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Temple-of-Muses-1024x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-677\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Temple-of-Muses-1024x351.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Temple-of-Muses-300x103.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Temple-of-Muses-768x264.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Temple-of-Muses-1170x402.jpg 1170w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Temple-of-Muses.jpg 1247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Though, a Roman force invaded and cut down the olive groves in 86 BCE, the Academy is said to have remained for several hundred years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is uncertain exactly when the Academy closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to some historical sources, the Academy continued until the reign of Byzantine emperor Justinian. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"502\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Justinian-1024x502.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-679\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Justinian-1024x502.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Justinian-300x147.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Justinian-768x377.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Justinian-1170x574.jpg 1170w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Justinian.jpg 1242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 526 CE, the Academy is thought to have closed as a result of the orders issued by the emperor Justinian to close down all pagan schools of pre-Christian era. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Presented &amp; Published by: <\/a><\/mark><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">mamlabs.net<\/mark><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The world first school of philosophy was established by Greek philosopher Plato around 390 BCE.
