The monkeys are Japanese macaques, a common species in Japan. [Macaques is Short-tailed monkey]. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where did the monkeys come from and why is there sometimes a fourth monkey included with the others? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Toshogu-Shrine-1024x476.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-569\" width=\"834\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Toshogu-Shrine-1024x476.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Toshogu-Shrine-300x139.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Toshogu-Shrine-768x357.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Toshogu-Shrine.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 834px) 100vw, 834px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Tosho &#8211; Gu &#8211; Shrine<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The source that popularized this pictorial maxim is a 17th-century carving over a door of the famous T\u014dsh\u014d-g\u016b shrine in Nikk\u014d in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The carvings at Toshogu Shrine were carved by <strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EClSGrFM4Qk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hidari Jingoro<\/a><\/mark><\/strong>, a famous sculptor in Japan, who made all his sculpturing work with his left hand as he lost his right hand in a tragedy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hidari-Jingaro-1024x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-552\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hidari-Jingaro-1024x600.jpg 1024w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hidari-Jingaro-300x176.jpg 300w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hidari-Jingaro-768x450.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Hidari-Jingaro.jpg 1163w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hidari in Japanese means left-hander, and he believed to have incorporated Confucius\u2019s Code of Conduct, using the monkey as a way to depict man\u2019s life cycle.
