{"id":4955,"date":"2022-06-09T02:20:13","date_gmt":"2022-06-08T20:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/?page_id=4955"},"modified":"2022-06-24T19:22:39","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T13:52:39","slug":"the-father-of-railways","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/index.php\/the-father-of-railways\/","title":{"rendered":"The Father of Railways"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"702\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/01_title_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4958\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/01_title_web.webp 702w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/01_title_web-300x153.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">George Stephenson, a civil and mechanical engineer, is considered as the Father of Railways.<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>George was born on June 9, 1781 in Wylam, Northumberland, England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rail transport system in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century pioneered by his inventions helped a lot for the Industrial Revolution that made production processes shifted from hand to machine in Great Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard Rail gauge i.e. 1.435 m (4 feet 8.5 inches) being used by most of the world\u2019s railways was implemented by George Stephenson and hence called \u2018Stephenson gauge\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He and his son Robert Stephenson founded \u2018Robert Stephenson &amp; Company\u2019, the first locomotive manufacturing company to build railway engines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/02_father_son_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4965\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/02_father_son_web.webp 584w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/02_father_son_web-300x179.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company build the first steam locomotive to carry passengers called the Locomotion No. 1 in 1825 (operated by the Stockton &amp; Darlington Railway).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first intercity railway line (The Liverpool &amp; Manchester Railway opened in 1930) using locomotives was also built by him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George Stephenson was illiterate until the age of 18 since his parents were poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While working as an engineman at that time, he studied at night school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">George\u2019s achievements in brief: <\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He was contemporary to Humphry Davy and made some sort of similar safety lamp such as Davy\u2019s lamp and named it Geordie lamp in about 1815. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"621\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03_Davys-lamp.._web-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4971\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03_Davys-lamp.._web-1.webp 621w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/03_Davys-lamp.._web-1-300x175.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Royal Society approved Davy\u2019s lamp and the use of Stephenson lamp limited to North East England only.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In 1820, he was hired to build Helton Colliery Railway, an 8 mile (13 km) long private railway. It opened in 1822 and was the first railway operated without animals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Robert Stephenson and Company was set up by him along with Edward Pease, a woollen manufacturer from Darlington, England, Robert Stephenson (his son as the managing director), and Michael Longridge of Bedlington Ironworks.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It was set up to build \u201cLocomotion\u201d, the first locomotive for Stockton and Darlington Railway which was opened on September 27, 1825. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"662\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04_loco_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4974\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04_loco_web.webp 662w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/04_loco_web-300x141.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Stephenson drove the first coach \u2018Locomotion\u2019 transporting 80-ton load of coal and flour for 9 miles (14 km) with a speed of 24 mph (39 km\/h) in 2 hours at a stretch.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Locomotive was attached with a passenger car, for the first time, called \u2018Experiment\u2019 run with a steam engine. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"747\" height=\"290\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/05_experiment_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4977\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/05_experiment_web.webp 747w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/05_experiment_web-300x116.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 747px) 100vw, 747px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>George Stephenson and his team built four locomotives viz. Northumbrian, Phoenix, North Star, and Rocket for the L&amp;MR (Liverpool &amp; Manchester Railway) and the opening ceremony was held on September 15, 1830.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>He built a bridge known as Stephenson bridge still in use at Rainhill railway station on the A57, a major road called Warrington road which connects Liverpool and Lincoln. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"356\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06_bridge_rocket_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4980\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06_bridge_rocket_web.webp 700w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/06_bridge_rocket_web-300x153.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the American railroad companies consulted Stephenson and purchased many locomotives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was the first president of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), an independent professional association, formed in 1847.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The standard track gauge (also called Stephenson gauge) of 1.435 meter is used throughout much of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He took the place at 65 out of the 100 Greatest Britons following a nation-wide vote conducted by BBC in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were many museums or memorials have arranged honouring him such as George Stephenson\u2019s Birthplace in Wylam (his birth place) and Chesterfield Museum in Chesterfield, and Stephenson Memorial Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Many educational institutions have been named after him and his son such as:<\/mark><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>George Stephenson College in 2001,<\/li><li>George Stephenson High School in Killingworth,<\/li><li>Stephenson Memorial Primary School in Howdon,<\/li><li>The Stephenson Railway Museum in North Shields, and<\/li><li>The Stephenson Locomotive Society (SLS) in 1909.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A bronze statue of Stephenson was placed in front of Chesterfield Railway Station in 2005. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"722\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07_statue_house_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4983\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07_statue_house_web.webp 722w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/07_statue_house_web-300x166.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 722px) 100vw, 722px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephenson image was printed on the reverse of Series E \u00a35 notes between 1990 and 2003 by the Bank of England.
