{"id":3744,"date":"2022-05-23T02:26:45","date_gmt":"2022-05-22T20:56:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/?page_id=3744"},"modified":"2022-06-24T19:39:32","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T14:09:32","slug":"father-of-modern-taxonomy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/index.php\/father-of-modern-taxonomy\/","title":{"rendered":"Father of Modern Taxonomy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-medium-font-size\"><blockquote><p><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">What is meant by Taxonomy?<\/mark><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Taxonomy is a classification of organisms into groups based on similarities of structure or origin etc.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Carolus Linnaeus (Carl Linnaeus)<\/mark><\/strong>, the \u201cfather of modern Taxonomy and the Prince of Botanists\u201d, was born on May 23, 1707 in Rashult village, Smaland, Sweden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"339\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01_2_web-3.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3801\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01_2_web-3.webp 690w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/01_2_web-3-300x147.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is also honoured as one of the founders of modern ecology (the study of the relationships between living organisms and environment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carl Linnaeus was a botanist, zoologist, physician and explorer. The abbreviation L stands for Linnaeus in botany and zoology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His higher education was completed in Uppsala University, a public research university in Uppsala, Sweden (founded in 1477).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His books and publications: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/02_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3760\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/02_web.webp 680w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/02_web-300x127.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>\u2018Systema Naturae\u2019 (his first book on binomial nomenclature) in 1735,<\/li><li>Fundamenta Botanica in 1736,<\/li><li>Critica Botanica in 1737,<\/li><li>Genera Plantarum in 1737,<\/li><li>Hortus Cliffortiannus ( a catalogue of botanical holdings) in 1738,<\/li><li>\u2018Philosophia Botanica\u2019 (a complete book on nomenclature) in 1751,<\/li><li>Species Plantarum (the foundation for modern botanical nomenclature) in 1753.<\/li><li>Systema Naturae (10th edition, starting of zoological nomenclature) in 1758<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linnaeus became the Head (Rector) of Uppsala University in 1750.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"710\" height=\"263\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/03_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3764\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/03_web.webp 710w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/03_web-300x111.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linnaeus promoted breast-feeding for babies by mothers of upper class section advising to avoid wet nurses. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"310\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/04_2_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3803\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/04_2_web.webp 625w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/04_2_web-300x149.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Uppsala University he called his devoted students \u201capostles\u201d. Upon his instructions his apostles collected and organized new plants, animals and minerals according to Linnaeus system of nomenclature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some well-known apostles were: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Christopher Tamstrom (the first apostle),<\/li><li>Pehr Lofling,<\/li><li>Pehr Kalm,<\/li><li>Carl Peter Thunberg,<\/li><li>Peter Forsskal,<\/li><li>Daniel Solander, and<\/li><li>Joseph Banks and so on.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"678\" height=\"273\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/05_web-3.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3773\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/05_web-3.webp 678w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/05_web-3-300x121.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of his apostles came back and submitted their work to Linnaeus, but many of them, unfortunately, died during their expeditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William T. Steam said, famous British botanist said that all this was possible to apostles only with the help of Linnaeus\u2019s taxonomy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/mamlabs.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/07_william_web.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3774\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/07_william_web.webp 533w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/07_william_web-300x191.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the great efforts of these apostles Linnaeus system of nomenclature spread through the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was officially relieved from the Royal Swedish Academy of Science in 1763.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1769.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to deteriorating health condition, he retired from the post of rector at Uppsala University in 1772.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He suffered from Sciatica from 1773 onwards. A stroke in 1774 made him partially paralysed (right side).
